Silicone Breast Implants

in Indiana

On November 17, 2006, the FDA approved the use of silicone gel breast implants for cosmetic breast augmentation (enlargement) for all women aged 22 and over. This news comes after a 14-year period of restriction, when only breast reconstruction patients and women who already had gel breast implants were able to receive silicone breast implants.

Background information
To understand the abrupt departure and eventual return of silicone gel implants, some background information is helpful. The watershed event was a report by Connie Chung that described a small group of women with auto-immune diseases, such as Rheumatoid Arthritis, who felt that silicone breast implants were the cause of their illnesses. There was no scientific evidence to support these claims but there was no research available to disprove it either. The FDA acted quickly and decisively, if not thoughtfully, and banned silicone gel implants for cosmetic use.

Extensive research assures their safety
During the 14-year ban, extensive research was conducted to insure the safety of silicone gel implants, and the FDA has concluded that these implants are not associated with any underlying diseases. The American College of Rheumatology has also supported this conclusion.

Comparison of silicone gel implants and saline implants
Thus far the two main risks of breast augmentation, a leak or a capsular contracture, appear to be about the same in both silicone and saline breast implants, and these problems are very uncommon.

  • Silicone gel implants have a softer feel and weigh less than saline-filled implants.
  • They are less likely to form any type of ripple that could be seen or felt. The silicone gel implants require a slightly larger incision, and I recommend locating the incision in the breast fold because is the scar will not visible and the implant can be easily inserted without injuring it.
  • Silicone gel implants come pre-filled, unlike saline implants, which are filled after they've been inserted.

Potential leaks
The biggest concern regarding silicone gel implants is the risk of a leak. This concern was a primary focus for Mentor Corporation during the research phase as they developed the Memory GelŽ silicone implant. This silicone gel is cohesive, which means that it is constructed as a semi-solid that clings to itself. If the shell of the implant is disrupted, the gel filler will tend to hold together and resist spreading into the surrounding tissues.
